Young Kate Mara first started performing in a school musical, at the age of nine.

She got her television debut in NBC police procedural and legal drama series Law & Order (1997) in episode "Shadow", in role as Jenna Erlich.

She made her big screen debut in romantic drama film Random Hearts (1999) in role as Jessica Chandler.

Her breakthrough performance came as Alma Del Mar Jr. in romantic drama movie Brokeback Mountain (2005).
