She made her big screen debut in comedy film Foxy Lady (1971) in role as Girl Next Door. She got her television debut in CBC variety show The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour (1971) in role as Baffin Islander, Anthem Singer #2. Andrea breakthrough performance came as a founding cast member in sketch comedy show Second City Television (1976–1984), for which she won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. She landed her Broadway debut in a musical "My Favorite Year" (1992) in role as Alice Miller, at Vivian Beaumont Theatre, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical.
