Jackson first started performing with local acting group in Atlanta, he co-founded "Just Us Theatre". He began his professional acting career on the New York stage, he joined "Negro Ensemble Company". He made his professional stage debut in a play "Mother Courage and her Children" (1980) at The Public Theatre. He landed his Broadway debut in a play "The Mountaintop" (2011-2012) in role as Martin Luther King Jr., at Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. He made his big screen debut in blaxploitation movie Together for Days (1972) in role as Stan. He got his television debut in NBC drama series Movin' On (1976) in episode "Woman of Steel", in role as Patrolman. He landed his first break as Mister Señor Love Daddy in comedy drama film Do the Right Thing (1989). Jackson's breakthrough performance came as Jules Winnfield in drama crime movie Pulp Fiction (1994).
