Young Kris Kristofferson first started his career as a songwriter, he wrote song "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" for Johnny Cash (1969), for which won the Songwriter of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards. He made his big screen debut in drama film The Last Movie (1971) in role as Minstrel Wrangler. He got his television debut in Saturday Night Live (1976) in episode "Kris Kristofferson / Rita Coolidge". Kris's breakthrough came with Janis Joplin's version of his song "Me and Bobby McGee" (1971). He released debut studio album "Kristofferson" in 1970.
