He got his television debut in drama series The Inheritors (1974) in episode "Fathers and Sons", in role as Simon Leadbetter. He made his big screen debut in spy movie For Your Eyes Only (1981) in role as Claus. Dance's breakthrough performance came as Guy Perron in British television serial The Jewel in the Crown (1984). He landed his debut as a writer and director with drama film Ladies in Lavender (2004).
