He made his big screen debut in coming of age comedy film Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) in role as Brad's Bud. Cage's breakthrough performance came as Smokey in drama movie Rumble Fish (1983). He landed his directorial debut with crime drama film Sonny (2002), for which he was nominated for the Grand Special Prize at Deauville Film Festival.
